UPDATE: We've recently improved our MailChimp integration a lot. See the updated tutorial on how to send coupons with MailChimp.

In 2013, RetailMeNot said, “Coupon usage is ubiquitous.” They revealed that 93% of Americans shop with coupons with 29% of Americans using mobile coupons. Consumer shopping habits have most certainly changed over the years, with many consumers becoming more price-conscious and opting to purchase one brand over another if they are offered some sort ofdiscount coupon.

One of the best ways to engage consumers and drive sales is through the use of coupons. Remember that coupons are more than just a one-time deal - they have the potential to create ongoing customer loyalty.

With Voucherify & MailChimp, you can easily edit, manage and distribute unique coupon codes via email marketing. In sending the coupon code via email to customers we can define three main categories:

  • loyal customers (with whom you want to strengthen the relationship even more),
  • new customers (who you want to impress and keep close),
  • and potential new customers (who you want to acquire).

In almost all cases within these categories, we have to adopt different marketing strategies. Nevertheless, there is one sure thing, customers are more responsive nowadays to personalized and spontaneous communication. It is reasonable, therefore to send a unique code to a specific customer, what's moreover, personalized codes will limit potential fraud.

Coupon/voucher campaigns in Voucherify

Firstly, we will start with codes generation. We can use Voucherify for this specific purpose and build our first campaign. Let’s say we need to distribute 100 one-off vouchers which carry a 20% discount and should be active until May. In Voucherify you can define all these parameters and then use the API to model validation and redemption workflow wired to your selling platform.

Having created a Voucherify account, you can start defining your first campaign:

Once you submit your form the vouchers are generated. It may take a while if the number is large, but when it's done you will be notified so then you can see a brand-new campaign in the campaigns overview. You will find more details and samples in the documentation.

Export coupons campaign to MailChimp

In the next step, we need to prepare a service for sending out emails with promo details. We will use a really powerful tool to do this- MailChimp. It has a wide range of functions including email templating, managing subscribers lists (segmentation), and automated emails for sending marketing content at the proper time. In this post we will just focus on using subscriber’s segmentation and templating features.

After the free sign-up, you have to create a subscriber’s list. The MailChimp interface is really user-friendly, thus you will find a proper view to create a new list without any trouble. After this you get a bucket where you can collect the list of customers to whom you will send your vouchers. You can fill in the list either manually or by importing data from a CSV file.

Once you build the subscribers list, you will need to define the segment of customers to whom you will send vouchers. You must make sure that:

  • You have Non-empty Segment(s). The selected Segment should have Auto-Update turned off.
  • The Voucherify campaign is active (valid expiration date).

Afterward you can use the export wizard to push coupon codes to MailChimp.

Voucherify will create a Merge Tag with a name matching the following pattern: “Voucherify_Campaign Name”. When finished, it will start assigning the codes to the Segment’s members.

In order to ensure that vouchers have been exported successfully visit the Segment members and go through subscriber details. The codes should be bound to a merge tag. If everything looks correct, you can start using the unique codes in your marketing emails. For more details visit the documentation page.

You can start using this mechanism for building promo campaigns and sending them out from now on. Moreover, thanks to the built-in tools provided by Voucherify, in MailChimp we get monitoring which helps us to maintain this small system.

In the next step you can leverage the Voucherify API to do the heavy lifting and get a lot of value instantly. By wiring this API into your platform you are getting much more than just discount code generation and distribution; you can finally track voucher redemptions, collect customer data and limit the access to promo whenever you want.
